On June 25, members of The Shah Family Foundation joined Trillium Health Partners, fellow donors, political dignitaries, and community leaders to break ground on the future home of the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children.
This groundbreaking marks a major milestone in Ontario’s health care sector. When complete the new hospital will become the province’s first health care facility fully dedicated to the needs of women and children. Located in Mississauga, it forms part of a redevelopment plan alongside the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, which is set to become the largest hospital in Canada.
The ceremony brought together key provincial and municipal leaders, including The Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario; The Honourable Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Mayor Carolyn Parrish of Mississauga. Alongside the Shah Family, fellow philanthropists Blair Wolk (Orlando Corporation) and Peter Gilgan (Gilgan Foundation) also participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking, reflecting a shared commitment to transforming health care in the region.
Kris Shah, Founder of the Shah Family Foundation, spoke at the event, reflecting on his family’s deep roots in Mississauga and their long-standing connection to Trillium Health Partners. He emphasized how personal this project feels, both as local residents and as recipients of care from the Trillium system.
“This project is about more than just the physical building,” Kris shared. “It’s about building a future where every mother, every child, and every family is met with compassion, respect, and world-class care.”
He also spoke to the significance of giving back to a community that has shaped so much of their journey.
“Mississauga has given our family so much. It’s where we built our lives and our business, and it’s always felt like home. Supporting this hospital is our way of saying thank you and helping ensure future generations have access to the care they need, close to home.”
The Shah Family’s transformational gift, announced in 2024, will help ensure families across Peel Region and beyond have access to equitable, specialized, and compassionate care.
With the first shovels in the ground, this project moves from vision to reality and brings us one step closer to a future where women and children receive the care they deserve, when and where they need it most.
